What Jesus Would Say to Today’s Politicians

As I was reading election news this week, and once again getting frustrated with how ignorant both parties and their supporters are anymore, a few thoughts came to mind from Jesus’ interactions with the politicians of his day.  I spent some time going back over them this week and found that with a little revision for the 2012 elections, Jesus’ words can be as true for politicians today as they were 2000 years ago.

Regarding bipartisanship

Woe unto you Democrats and Republicans.  You blame the other for the faults of this country while failing to see the damage you have done yourselves.  You place the burden of government programs on the people who elected you into office, yet refuse to use those programs yourself. Everything you do is to be seen and loved by people, not what is good for them.  (Matthew 23)  Work together as iron sharpens iron (Proverbs 27:17) because where two or more work together there is a greater reward for their work. (Ecclesiastes 4:9)

Regarding Taxes

Give Uncle Sam the things that are his, and to God the things that are His.  (Matthew 12:17) But every coin and dollar has “In God we Trust”.  Remember not to worry so much? Look at the lilies of the field and how they grow. They don’t work or make their clothing, and even Kardashians use them to decorate. (Matthew 6:28)

Regarding Foreign Policy

I tell you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, and do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you.  (Mattew 5:44)  But if they refuse to hear your council and despise you, have nothing to do with them.  (Matthew 18)

Regarding Respect for Elected Officials

You may not have voted for the President or others you work with, but you must still respect them and work with them.  They were placed there by the same authority that placed you here and that power can be taken away from you too.  (Romans 13:1) They will be held accountable. (Hebrews 13:17)

Regarding Social Programs

The poor will always be with you (Mark 17:7), so provide for them and care for them.  But don’t reward the lazy.  Those who abuse the system and make no effort shouldn’t be rewarded for it.  (Matthew25:26-30)
