Why Do Christians Do Good Things?

To paraphrase a recent discussion I had with an Atheist/Agnostic relative, “religious people in general do good things because of their subliminal desire for good in the afterlife.”  Therefore it begs to question:

Do you do good deeds because of your religion or despite it?

Would you still be inclined to do good if “God” didn’t say to or there was no heaven or hell?
